From the Blurb:

Captain Fan Sung has blown it this time. Not only was she caught stealing from a drug lord, she was also caught kissing his young wife. She needs to get to her ship, the Huxian Fox, and get off the planet—fast.

Princess Eshan’ya is running from The Quain. They have attacked the palace and if they find her, they'll kill her. There’s no hiding on this planet, especially not when the royal guards are also looking for her, and she refuses to return to the palace. Her best chance is to sneak aboard the Huxian Fox.

As the ship enters space, Fan thinks she’s made a clean getaway. But she's not impressed when she finds her stowaway—even if she is beautiful. She’s even less impressed when the Huxian Fox is attacked by the Quain and the Royal Fleet.

The Quain are intent on taking over the galaxy, but Eshan’ya plans on stopping them—if only she can convince Fan Sung to help her.

More About Nikki Brooke:

How long does it take you to write a book? How long does each stage of the process usually take?

The Huxian Fox took only 3 months to draft, and was the quickest book I've written coz it's lots of fun. The editing took about 6 months once it started.

What is your favourite type of character to write?

Fan has been my favourite character so far and she's sassy, smart, and courageous. She's far from perfect, but her flaws make her so much more relatable.

What do you do when you find yourself in a bit of a writing rut? Is there any strategy you find works for you to help the words start flowing again?

My writing ruts are usually caused by mental health, so they can be hard to overcome. Doing positive affirmations, meditation, and manifesting activities can really help. As well as any activities that help mental health.

I also like playing a game based on the improv 'yes, and' rule of thumb. I brainstorm with a friend and get them to say something wild, sometimes silly, and expand on that thought by saying 'yes' and then adding something more wild or silly. It's a great way to generate ideas. Some will be too crazy to include, but often a small gold nugget can be found in there.

What is something you wish you had known earlier on in your writing career?

I wish I could go back and tell myself that I can do it, that I can be a writer. I was held back a long time due to my own limiting beliefs that I wasn't good enough. So I wish I knew earlier that I could.

*

Do you mine your own life for ideas, settings and/or characters?

They go to several different planets in The Huxian Fox, and some of the locations are inspired by places I've visited. For example, there are some ancient ruins inspired by places in Greece, and a desert planet inspired by Wadi Rum.

*

What is your favourite writing resource?

The Emotion Thesaurus by Angela Ackerman and Becca Puglist. Such a great way to figure out how someone might react to emotions, and use different ways to show those emotions.

What authors or books inspire you the most?

I'm very inspired by you Ash!! You're a great author and a lovely encouraging person. OK, I'm done sucking up, haha. I also love CS Pacat, Amie Kaufman, Jay Kristoff, Lynette Noni, Nikky Lee, John Marsden - who are all Aussie authors!

What's next for your writing?

I'm working on the sequels for both The Huxian Fox and Plagued Lands. They're very different series so it's interesting working on them at the same time. And the audio book for Plagued Lands will be released very soon!
